You know, I’ve always thought coloring clothing was such a good idea. I mean, what’s not to like? You get to color a design, and then you can wear it afterwards. It’s useful! Of course, if you have been following Cleverpedia for any length of time, you know that there are tons of ways to use your colored pages when you’re done with them, including the tutorial I just posted yesterday, but coloring products just take that one step further.
It’s surprisingly hard to find coloring clothing though, unless you make it yourself. At least it was… until I discovered Doodlr, a line of coloring clothes (and aprons, tote bags, pillows and more!) by ShirtBox!

A Closer Look at Doodlr
Doodlr, as I mentioned previously, is a new line of adult coloring printed products by ShirtBox. They sell a variety of shirts, hoodies, aprons, pillow covers, and tote bags, offered in a variety of designs, from a mandala, to a skull, and a variety of other abstract and animal designs.
Doodlr’s tshirts are 100% cotton, and apparently come treated with a “special eco-friendly coating” that helps the fabric marker ink adhere to the design and come out more vibrant. This coating apparently washes out in the first wash, so be sure to fully color and set the ink prior to laundering.
Each Doodlr product comes packaged with a set of 8 fabric markers, in red, pink, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, and black.
Here are the products I received from ShirtBox to test out:
Here’s the first Doodlr product I’ve colored so far:
It’s a crazy time of year, so I’ve only gotten to finish one Doodlr product so far, but you better believe that I am excited to color the other ones!
I knew when I saw this mandala tote bag on ShirtBox’s website, I just had to have it. Isn’t this thing awesome?! It’s the perfect size to fit even my largest coloring books, and what better way to carry around your coloring books in style than inside a mandala bag you colored yourself? You’d be the coolest colorist ever dropping into your local adult coloring group toting your supplies in this thing.
Like the other Doodlr products, the tote bag is ethically produced and 100% cotton, though the material is rougher than the tshirts. It’s similar to the light tan canvas style fabric you typically find with tote bags, just a bit thinner.
Check out my speed coloring video below:
(You like that disappearing act my other arm does three seconds in? That’s what I get for not putting my phone into airplane mode before recording, haha. I got a call almost immediately and had to pause. Oops.)
This was a lot of fun to color! The spaces were just the right size — not so huge that they were exhausting to color evenly, and not so small that it was hard to stay in the lines. The lines were also a nice forgiving thickness.
In retrospect, I wish I had picked a color palette ahead of time and limited myself to it, I was just so eager to try out all the colors!
Speaking of the markers, let’s talk about those for a second.
I received a pack of eight markers tucked into each of the five items I received. A bit excessive, I thought as I opened them. HOWEVER! As I started to color, I could see why that was. The markers are really only usable for so long (about the time it takes to fully color one product) until they get too fuzzy to steadily produce color. It’s not the marker’s fault — they are actually fantastic fabric pens, all things considered. The color goes on very thick, and it almost feels like paint. The rougher fabric of the tote bag is definitely to blame here — I colored a small section of one of the other shirts after finishing the bag to see how it felt, and I could tell the smoother fabric wasn’t as hard on the markers. Either way, you might not want to expect to hold onto these markers for too long after you finish your Doodlr product.
I had to do some preparation to be able to color the tote bag worry-free. I stuck a number of sheets of paper into the bag and pushed them into each corner so that the markers would not seep through to the other side of the bag, and I’m glad I did, because they definitely leaked through a little bit. (It was graph paper — which is why there is a light graph paper pattern in the video!)
For the sake of the video, I also taped down each corner of the bag right to my desk to keep it in place as I colored. Not a bad arrangement overall, if you can color from the top left to the bottom right (if you’re right-handed), though with a mandala this was a little tricky. My inclination with a mandala is to start near the center and work outwards, spinning the page as I go, but I can’t do that when I’m filming! As a result, I had to carefully keep my wrists from smudging color I’d already put down, which made holding the marker a little awkward at times. But the end result was so worth it!
Once you are done coloring, the markers instruct you to let your artwork air dry for 24 hours. Then, for best results, you should set the ink with an iron before washing. Very easy! I recommend putting something between the Doodlr product and your iron to protect it from the ink.
These products are just such a great idea. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t make them myself a year or two ago. Grrr. (Just kidding!)
It’s just so much fun to be able to color in the design exactly how you like it, and then wear it out or otherwise put your coloring to work in some way. They also make such great gifts — either as a kit, to be colored by the recipient, or as a thoughtful hand-colored gift in the recipient’s favorite colors.
Okay, I’m sold… how do I get my own Doodlr products?
Doodlr is sold by ShirtBox, a company in the UK, but don’t worry — they ship anywhere in the world! My products crossed the ocean and still arrived in awesome condition.
To purchase these products, head over to the Doodlr collection on their website and pick your favorite design! Although the designs are displayed on tshirts on this page, once you click a design you like, you can choose any product — tshirt, tank top, hoodie, sweatshirt, apron, cushion cover… — from the dropdown. You can also choose a size for all wearable items.
