Hottest New Coloring Books: January 2017 Roundup

 

The start of the New Year saw a lot of exciting new releases in the coloring world! Like I do every month, I’ve dug around to find the most interesting new releases that came our way this month.

In this monthly series, I round up the list of the hottest new releases in the coloring book world for the past month, so you don’t need to dig to find new books you’ll love. Feel free to sound off about other new releases you’ve got your eyes on in the comments!

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Adult Coloring Book

Release Date: January 17, 2017

My parents were both huge fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its sequel Angel. In fact, through school I played the cello and my mom found the sheet music to the opening theme of Angel and I would use it to warm up.

Anyway, I feel like I grew up very familiar with these shows, so it was really exciting when I came across this book available for pre-order a few months ago. And now it is here!

All the artwork for the book was originally created for this official coloring book. A number of artists contributed to the book, including Karl Moline, Rebekah Isaacs, Georges Jeanty, Yishan Li, Steve Morris, and Newsha Ghasemi, so inside you will find a number of different styles of linework.

There are 45 pages of designs to color, printed on just one side of the page. The designs range from more basic to rather elaborate, meaning there is something for everyone. On the reverse of the pages are quotes and information about the episodes the pages are from, making it a great gift for a colorist who is a fan.

2. Avian Friends Coloring Book

Release Date: January 16, 2017

This adorable book contains 38 pages of original artwork to color, illustrated by Geninne D. Zlatkis. I love the style of the artwork — it is folksy and neither too complex nor super simple. In addition to all the cute birds, there are a lot of pretty flowers to color.

3. Posh Adult Coloring Book: Thomas Kinkade Peaceful Moments

Release Date: January 17, 2017

Thomas Kinkade was a popular American painter who created idyllic nature scenes. Posh has published several other well-received coloring books based off of his artwork.

This book includes 63 pages to color. Each painting is presented in a page spread where the left side is a full-color print of the painting, and the right side is line art to color. You can try your hand at reproducing Kinkade’s artwork with markers or colored pencils, or go an entirely new direction with your own color scheme.

4. Cinnamon Bun Dreams: A Comfort Food Coloring Book

Release Date: January 3, 2017

Are you hungry? You will be after looking at the previews of this book!

Squishable assembled a team of artists to create this adorable book full of sweets and comfort food. Some of the pages show scenes in a food-filled landscape, while others turn the foods into a repeating pattern or a comfort food mandala.

The paper is white, perforated, and heavy weight, and there are 60 illustrations to color. The illustrations are printed on just one side of the page, accompanied by a foodie quote on the other side.

This is a great coloring book for you if you want to add a little humor to your coloring session, or just love food!

6. Frank Lloyd Wright Coloring Postcards

Release Date: January 16, 2017

I am a huge fan of art deco and the unique style of architecture pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright. This postcard book includes 16 rip-out postcards illustrated in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, each with a unique design. The cards measure 4.75″ by 6.5″, making them a little too large to mail at postcard rate in the US, but this is still a great size for coloring a quick piece.

7. Creative Haven Hearts Coloring Book

Release Date: January 18, 2017

This new Creative Haven coloring book is just in time for Valentine’s Day! It features 31 original designs based on heart shapes, all with dramatic black backgrounds that make your color choices really POP! There are a lot of fine details to color and each page will take some time, but the end results will be worth it!

The pages are perforated for easy removal, and printed on one side of a medium weight paper. If you love the sample images above, you can grab your own copy on Amazon!

8. Color Me Enchanted: A Coloring Book of Fairy Tales from Around the World

Release Date: January 3, 2017

I spotted this book on Amazon and was immediately impressed by the unique subject and the pretty, original illustrations! The book is softcover and featuring some lovely gold foiling on the cover. Inside are 65 different illustrations to color, printed on both sides of medium weight paper. Each illustration is based on a specific fairy tale from all over the world.

One reviewer helpfully listed all the fairytales included: Thumbalina, The Tortoise with a Pretty Daughter, The Boy who drew Cats, The Wizard of Oz, the Snow Queen, Firebird, Masha and the Bear, Alice in Wonderland, The Star Maiden, The Selkie Bride, The Little Mermaid, Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Snake Prince, Gypsy Queen, The Fair Maid and the Snow White Unicorn, Vasilisa the Fair, Beauty and the Beast, The Dragon Princess, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Tsar Saltan, Rapunzel, The Bamboo Cutter and the Moon Child, Snow White, and the Princess and the Pea.

Each story is labelled and introduced with a few words about the fairytale, with a really neat illuminated letter at the beginning of the paragraph, which I thought was a really neat feature.

9. Creative Haven Spring Scenes Coloring Book

Release Date: January 18, 2017

Ahh, the sweet smell of flowers in the air. Explosions of color all over the landscape: brilliant tulips, daffodils, roses, and more. If you love springtime, you are going to love this coloring book.

This book by Creative Haven features 31 original illustrations all themed around springtime. The paper is a medium weight, printed on just one side, and the pages are perforated for ease of removal.

10. Vive Le Color! Roses

Release Date: January 31, 2017

Vive le Color’s mini (7 inch square) coloring books pack a big punch! They all include clever features that colorists love, including single-sided pages, top binding that is comfortable for both right- and left-handed colorists, and easy to tear out pages that come out of the book like a piece of notepaper.

This book is rose-themed and includes a number of different styles of roses throughout the book. There are 72 single-sided pages in all. Some are single roses, some are bouquets, and some are a repeating pattern across the whole page. If you love roses, or just want to get in the Valentine’s Day spirit, this will be a great coloring book for you!
