Hottest new coloring book releases in April 2017! I was thrilled to see books based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett!

1. Mythomorphia: An Extreme Coloring and Search Challenge

Mythomorphia: An Extreme Coloring and Search Challenge

Release Date: April 11, 2017

If you loved Kerby Rosanes’ earlier coloring books, Animorphia and Imagimorphia, you are sure to appreciate the third book in the collection, Mythomorphia. The book features 53 designs based on mythological creatures such as Medusa, sea monsters, dragons, elves, pegasus, and more. There is also an eye-spy challenge to find a variety of magical items throughout the pages of the book.

While the book does have these search and find challenges, as a whole the book is less doodle-focused than Rosanes’ previous books. I like the new style! Don’t get me wrong — the doodly artwork was definitely unique, and made for a fun coloring experience. But this book really allows his artistic skill to shine through.

The illustrations are printed on both sides of heavy white paper. The pages are not perforated and I don’t recommend removing them from the book. Many designs are spread across both pages.

Overall, this is one of the books I was most excited about in April! If you like the look of this book, pick up your own copy here!

Release Date: April 25, 2017

If you love Neil Gaiman’s classic American Gods, you are going to love this coloring book. Here’s a description of what you’ll see inside:

The land of Neil Gaiman’s beloved, bestselling novel American Gods is a place where gods—old and new, good and evil—walk among humans; where magic can revive the dead; and where a storm is brewing… one that threatens to bring about a war for the very soul of America. Now, for the first time, fans of this modern masterwork can bring Gaiman’s intricately imagined landscape to life thanks to dozens of gorgeously rendered black-and-white line drawings from renowned illustrators Yvonne Gilbert, Jon Proctor, and Craig Phillips. Indulge your inner artist and revel in the stunning imagery of the gods and people, places and artifacts of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods.

The book features 46 original illustrations. Illustrations are printed on just one side of the page; the page opposite features a quote from the scene that the drawing is based upon. Grab your copy here!

Release Date: April 25, 2017

This brand new coloring book is based on the mythos of the Discworld series and was illustrated by Pratchett’s own chosen illustrator, Paul Kidby. Here’s a description from Amazon:

Paul Kidby, Sir Terry Pratchett’s artist of choice, designed the UK covers for the Discworld novels since 2002 and is the author of the definitive portfolio volume The Art of Discworld. Containing black-and-white line drawings based on his hugely popular artwork with original pieces created exclusively for this book, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Coloring Book features iconic Discworld personalities including Granny Weatherwax, Sam Vimes, Archchancellor Ridcully, Rincewind, Tiffany Aching, and, of course, Death. This is the coloring book that all Discworld fans need!

The book features 77 original designs to color, printed on both sides of the page. Several designs spread across both pages. Additionally, 16 full-color renderings of some of the pages in the book are included for your inspiration! Release Date: April 11, 2017

I’m really excited about this one! Watercolor coloring books are picking up speed as watercolor gains popularity, and this one is quite a treat. The pages are printed on thick watercolor paper that is perfect for watercolor or any media you throw its way. The pages are printed on just one side and easily removable for display.

You can pick up the accompanying set of watercolor pencils, or opt for a more traditional set of watercolors like this 30-color set by Sakura. Either way, with this book, there are lots of beautiful, painterly pieces of art in your future.

Release Date: April 25, 2017

This beautiful coloring book by Leila Duly features vintage-style drawings of plants and flowers for your coloring enjoyment. It is a smaller than average size and includes 95 pages of designs printed on both sides of heavy ivory paper. There is a sort of calendar style organization to the book, with month-themed pages and, according to the description, “two [coloring] pages per week, adding up to a year’s worth of coloring enjoyment.”

Colortronic Animals: A Kaleidoscopic Coloring Challenge

Release Date: April 4, 2017

The Colortronic series features color by number coloring with a twist: the colors used in this book are bold and beautiful technicolor!

The 29 animal designs are printed on just one side of the page. The paper is heavy and perforated for ease of removal. The spaces are moderately sized — not too small for those who struggle with the fine spaces in, for example, some Johanna Basford books.

There is a full-color index at the back with a thumbnail of each image colored in so you can see what the pages look like before you start to color.

If you love the brilliant designs hinted at by the cover, grab your own copy right here!

Magic Beauty: Coloring Book for Adults

Release Date: March 31, 2017

This coloring book by independent artist Nadiya Vasilkova is really unique! The artist uses pointillism to shade in a way that does not detract from the coloring experience. Many of the designs include flora, fauna, people, and abstract mandala designs for a truly unique experience.

The book includes 50 designs printed on one side only. The paper is fairly thin — the book is printed through CreateSpace, like with many indie coloring book artists — but my experience with single-sided CreateSpace paper has been positive. Colored pencils work great, and markers work well if you remove the page you are working on or protect the pages behind.

If you like this artist’s style, you can grab a copy here!

Here’s something a little different! This Christian coloring book features 40 beautiful, minimalist style illustrations. Designs are printed on just one side of the page; the opposite side features a prayer or affirmation that the drawing is based on.

The paper is medium-weight and acid-free. The pages are perforated for ease of removal, both for coloring and display.
