When I was younger, one of my favorite things to do was to cut up magazines and rearrange the pieces into notebooks. Armed with a purple gluestick and piles of bottoms, tops, shoes, and faces, I went to work pasting down my own combinations of outfits.
Coloring a fashion coloring book has a similar effect, minus the sticky glue fingers! I first became aware of Color in Fashion: A Stylish Adult Coloring Book, Alecia Blake’s first coloring book, after she submitted it to share it with my readers. I was blown away, not only because these are gorgeous fashion designs illustrated by a professional fashion illustrator, but also because of the intricate backgrounds that accompany every figure.

A Look Inside Color in Fashion
Color in Fashion: A Stylish Adult Coloring Book is a standard-sized, glossy covered adult coloring book featuring original fashion illustrations by Alecia Blake.
Alecia Blake is a talented illustrator based in New Jersey. Her art career has spanned the fashion industry as well as child-friendly art and now, a coloring book.
In total, there are 30 hand-drawn designs to color in the book, printed on just one side of the page. The paper is a little thin, but the one-sided printing means you can slip a few sheets behind the one you are working on if you are using markers in the book, like I did. The linework is a pretty consistent width throughout, a great width for coloring with either markers or pencils.
I love the organic feel of the linework (because it is hand-drawn!) and how the theme of the artwork changes from page to page.

Something I love about this book is that in addition to intricate dresses, scarves, and other clothing, the illustrations in this book include backgrounds! This is very unusual for a fashion coloring book, as they usually focus on the models only, leaving the backgrounds white. The backdrops in this book range from nature and city scenes to big, bold patterned wallpapers.
While most of the pages include one figure, head to toe, there are a few pages that zoom in to just the top half, or that include multiple figures, like the free page above.
Yes, the cover image is included in the book! It is such a huge pet peeve of mine when it isn’t. Here are a few more sample pages:
Here’s the first page I’ve colored so far:
I really enjoyed having the chance to color this book! I really do enjoy fashion coloring, because it is often so pattern-y, and this book was no disappointment in that regard! It was also fun to pick a contrasting color scheme for the wallpaper from the clothes.
Can I just take a second to express how much I love wallpaper designs like this one? I know “wallpaper art” is often the throwaway pages of mass produced coloring books (the Harry Potter coloring books come to mind), but this is hand-drawn and funky and I love it!
To color this page, I started with my pale skin-tone Copic marker to fill in all the skin areas. I did this first mostly because my Copics tend to bleed a lot on this kind of paper, so I wanted to make sure it didn’t bleed uncontrollably before I continued! Fortunately, it behaved itself and left a nice smooth texture for her skin.
Next, I moved to her hair, jacket, and then the wallpaper. I mostly used my trusty Tombow markers, but used my Staedtler Triplus Fineliners in the super-tiny spaces like her glasses and a few parts of the wallpaper. Overall, the page took about an hour and 45 minutes to complete.

I really enjoyed this book. It was so meditative filling in the wallpaper pattern, and the people gave me a chance to invent outfits I love, just like I did as a child.
Okay, I’m sold… how do I get a copy?
Honestly, it’s a bargain at $7.99 — you could go get a copy now and if you happen to win a prize in this giveaway, give it to a friend as a gift. There is a lot of variety within the fashion realm because of those backgrounds, and it’s just plain fun to color!
Don’t forget to share your colored pages! I’d love to see your colored rendition of the free page, or any other page from the book!
