Adult Coloring Books

Best Coloring Books for Dog Lovers

Written by Adrienne

When I put together my list of cat coloring books, I knew I would need to be fair and put together a list of the best coloring books about dogs!

I was surprised to find that there really are not that many coloring books devoted to dogs — there are way more about cats! Even worse, there are tons and tons of super low quality dog coloring books that I had to dig through to even uncover the books I included in this list.

I did the digging so you don’t have to. Take a look at the dog adult coloring books below and their sample images to get a sneak peak of what they contain. You can also click through the images/titles of the books and use the “Look Inside” feature on Amazon to see even more.

Enjoy!

Dogs to Paint or Color (Dover Art Coloring Book)

Dogs to Paint or Color (Dover Art Coloring Book)

Illustrator John Green’s work has been featured in a number of Dover Coloring Books. This book features his high-quality linework, but on heavy paper that can hand up to whatever medium you throw at it, from gel pens to markers to watercolors. The images are only printed on one side of the page.

There are about two dozen images to color. The dogs are only lightly detailed, giving you the opportunity to color texture and the markings of your choice into their fur. The images have highly detailed backgrounds of landscapes, backyards, and more.

If you are looking for a dog coloring book heavy enough for markers or watercolor pencils, this is the book you’re looking for! Get your copy here.

Amazing Dogs: Adult Coloring Book

This coloring book features dazzling patterns and a large variety of dog breeds. Here are the breeds featured in this book: Bulldog, Chihuahua, Doberman, Rottweiler, Boxer, Great Danish, Bloodhound dog, Collie, Bull Terrier, Dalmatian Dog, Shih Tzu, San Bernard, Basset Hound, Shar Pei, King Charles, German Shepherd, Poodle, Pomeranian, Pekingese, Husky, American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff), Labrador Retriever, Greyhound, Yorkshire Terrier, Chinese Crested Dog, Chow Chow, Cocker Spaniel, Schnauzer, Pug, Herding dog, Old English Sheepdog, Red Chinese Tibetan Mastiff.

There are 30 designs to color in this book, which are printed on a single side of the page. The paper is quite thin, so you will want to protect the following pages or remove the page you are coloring from the book if you want to color with markers.

Still, the patterns are exciting and lots of different breeds are featured. You can find this book on Amazon.

This book is chock full of dogs in hats, scarves, and oversize hipster glasses. It gives you some of the fun of coloring in fashion books, with the fun of shading in the dogs’ fur the way you choose. The book is geared towards younger colorists, but the large spaces give you plenty of room to shade and texturize the way you like.

There are over 30 images to color in this book. It is printed double-sided, so you will want to avoid markers or other media that can bleed through the page. However, it is perfect for colored pencils or crayons. You can get a copy on Amazon.

Dogs Stained Glass Coloring Book

Dogs Stained Glass Coloring Book

If you’re not familiar with Dover’s Stained Glass Coloring Books, you’re in for a treat. These books are printed on translucent paper with thick black outlines. When colored and placed in front of a light — like the sun shining through your window — the designs glow like a stained glass window.

This book features 16 images printed on just one side of the page (they have to be, or the stained glass effect wouldn’t work!). The dog breeds are the American Kennel Club’s top breeds.

You can color the spaces solid colors, or shade and blend with colored pencils. I do think the stained glass effect works best with vibrant colors, but with bright enough light anything will look great. Get your copy here!

Here’s another great coloring book illustrated by John Green. It features 40 realistic dog portraits with a wide variety of breeds, including collies, poodles, dachshunds, beagles, and others. The designs are printed on both sides of medium weight paper, which is perfect for pencils but you might want to scan and reprint the pages if you want to use markers. You can get this book for under $5 on Amazon.

Creative Haven Dazzling Dogs Coloring Book

Creative Haven Dazzling Dogs Coloring Book

Dazzling Dogs is the upcoming coloring book by Marjorie Sarnat in the same style as her bestselling book Creative Cats. It features 31 pages of dogs of a variety of breeds, intricately patterned with flowers, stripes, paisley, hearts, and other shapes. If it is like Creative Cats, the images will probably revolve around a variety of themes.

Like all Creative Haven coloring books, the images are printed on medium weight paper that can handle colored pencils and markers. The pages are printed on one side only, so bleed through from markers will not matter as long as you protect the next page. They are also perforated, so if you want to display the colored page, you can easily remove it from the book.

The book is due out in May 2016. Preorder your copy today!

Creative Haven Lovable Cats and Dogs Coloring Book

Creative Haven Lovable Cats and Dogs Coloring Book

This is another upcoming book from Creative Haven, due out in September 2016 and illustrated by Ruth Soffer, who also illustrated the stained glass coloring book above. I haven’t seen any of the pictures inside but I have high hopes for it. While many coloring books focus on either cats or dogs, this book focuses on both.

Creative Haven Dogs Color by Number Coloring Book

Creative Haven Dogs Color by Number Coloring Book

This upcoming book by Creative Haven isn’t just a typical coloring book — it’s a color by number book. Unlike some other brands, Creative Haven does a good job making the numbers in their images pretty subtle, so they aren’t super obvious once you’ve colored in the image.

The book will feature 46 images to color printed on one side of medium weight paper. The pages are perforated for ease of removal.

This adult coloring book will be released in May 2016. Preorder your copy today.

I debated about including this book on the list because it has very few Amazon reviews. While I have not seen the book in person, I was impressed by some of the illustrations I found in the book. These dog portraits have bold patterned backgrounds. The artwork is original linework created by Heather Land.

The breeds featured in this book are: Corgi, Schnauzer, Great Dane, Sheltie, Sharpei, Pomeranian, Rottweiler, Chihuahua, St. Bernard, Yorkie, Pit Bull, Dachshund, Border Collie, Basset Hound, Papillon, Doberman, Pug, Whippet, Newfoundland, Cocker Spaniel, Husky, German Shepherd, Boxer, Poodle, Shih Tzu, Dalmatian, Beagle, and a mixed breed. There’s definitely a lot of variety in here.

The images are printed single sided, but the paper is on the thin side. Definitely protect the next page before you color with anything other than colored pencils. If you like the sample images above, you can get a copy on Amazon right here!

This book definitely falls more on the cartoon side of the spectrum than the realistic side, but this is a great coloring book for anyone who loves filling in lots of small spaces. Pick a key color scheme to pattern across the page or go crazy!

There are 50 pages total to color — 25 with black backgrounds and thick black outlines, and 25 light grey outlined images on a white background. Each dog is presented in both styles.

  • I really love your selection of Dog Coloring Books. It is really getting to be overwhelming to choose books. WhenI started coloring ten years ago, I had one book with 100 images that I colored in for years, then reordered it and started over, because it was the only book with high quality paper that I could find. I have recieved or purchased so mnay books, that I have become VERY selective- really because it is becoming STRESSFUL to have so many to choose from. Your descriptions are good enough for me to make the choice without having to wade through the hundreds myself. Thanks.

    • Of course — glad I could help, Lisa! I started making these lists when I started noticing tons of really low quality books appearing on Amazon — it really is tough sifting through them for the worthwhile ones! What’s your favorite coloring book?
