I watched how he held his pencil. I'd describe it if I could, but it's near impossible. He had all five of his fingers on the pencil. Imagine that if you can. His thumb was bent back so far, and all the tips of his fingers were pink with blood in them. He'd constantly put his pencil down and stretch his hands and complain they were hurting. But the teacher never noticed. It wasn't until I took him out of school and started doing it myself that I realized either. Everyone was failing my son, myself included. So I ordered these to try to help him and gave him lots of one on one time.
He fought these. He didn't want to use them. It took him a week to figure out how to pick the pencil up and hold it with this thing on it without looking it over. He complained. He doesn't want to write! It hurts his hand! He has to put the pencil down to erase, then struggle to figure out how to pick it back up. Stick with it! It does improve!
Now, he doesn't even notice. It's been 3 solid months of homeschool. He picks up his pencil, with the grip on it, and starts writing. He doesn't fight writing. His hand doesn't hurt. He doesn't even notice the grip on it and can use it with ease.
If he grabs a pencil without the grip on it, he holds it almost perfectly. No five fingers. The only problem with his pencil skills now is he still bends his thumb back, and it does hurt him to write. So we continue using the grip.
This did NOT fix his penmanship though! It's still bad. I figure since he's just now starting to hold his pencil correctly, it's OK if he has kindergarten level penmanship. He'll get better, or he won't. I'm OK with that. I'm simply thrilled that he doesn't fight school work anymore. I'm looking forward to him going back to class with his friends, and so is he.
My fingers are rather small in diameter for a man.
I feel I get a good grip on the pencil using this Pencil Grip device. I like the feeling of the material. I like the visual "R" or "L" markings that help me feel I am holding the grip in the right way. The grip has a very strong frictional hold on the pencil, and I feel more confident in doing my simple drawing activities.
The grip slides on a standard #2 pencil and holds it tightly. It is made to the Ticonderoga outer pencil sizing, so if you have a pencil which is larger or smaller in diameter, it simply won't fit. I don't know if it can be "resized" using a sharp knife to carve material out of the bore of the pencil grip.
I also like the different colors of the pencil grips. They are cheery, and it is easy to spot my pencil provided I don't toss papers on top of it.
I am not sure if pencil diameters vary a lot, but one improvement I'd suggest for this product is that it be able to work with mechanical pencils of either metal or plastic construction.
I think these pencil grips are extremely useful if you work in pencil -- at least for the very basic activities I do. (I can't draw even stick people, but my "smiley faces" see acceptable.)

Not only do they provide cushioning, but they force you to hold a pen correctly at the same time. Moreover, they're functional whether you're left or right-handed. Something I value, being that I'm ambidextrous and often alternate between hands. I also like how stretchy they are; I've paired them with my drawing pencils and Frixion pens.
☑ Positives
- Stopped my hands from cramping
- Forces you to hold a pen correctly
- Works for left and right-handed users
- Stretchy enough to fit most pens and pencils
☒ Negatives
- Bulky
